What is breast reduction?

Breasts that are too large for your frame can cause more than a cosmetic concern. Many women who seek a breast reduction live with back and neck pain, deep grooves from bra straps, rashes under the breast fold, stretch marks, and trouble exercising or finding clothes that fit. Reduction mammaplasty removes part of the breast tissue, fat and skin to create a smaller, lighter and more proportionate breast.

Incisions depend on your starting breast size and the size you want. The most common approach is an incision around the areola and a vertical one down to the breast crease, with or without a horizontal incision along that crease. Short-scar techniques can, in selected cases, reduce and reshape the breast while keeping the scars shorter.

For very large breasts, the nipple and areola sometimes need to be removed and grafted into their new position. This means loss of nipple sensation and of the ability to breastfeed, so your surgeon will discuss it with you beforehand if your case might require it.

Once healed, many patients notice relief from the discomfort caused by the weight of their breasts, find physical activity easier and can wear clothes that didn’t fit before. Results vary from person to person, and breast size and shape can keep changing with weight, pregnancy and age.

Who is it for?

Breast reduction is for women who feel the size or weight of their breasts gets in the way of daily life: back, neck or shoulder pain, posture problems, skin irritation, or discomfort during physical activity.
