What is eyelid surgery?
With age, eyelid skin loosens, the underlying muscle relaxes and the fat that cushions the eye starts to bulge. The result is a tired look: skin folding over the upper lid and puffy bags below. Blepharoplasty refreshes the area by removing or repositioning that excess skin, muscle and fat.

It can be done on the upper lids, the lower lids or both. Upper-lid incisions are hidden in the natural crease. Lower-lid incisions sit just below the lash line or inside the lid (a transconjunctival approach), depending on what needs correcting.
When heavy upper-lid skin blocks part of your peripheral vision, surgery can also have a functional benefit. Eyelid surgery does not lift the brows or erase crow’s feet, though. If those are your main concerns, a brow lift or Botox may be combined with it.
Eyelid scars are usually discreet, because eyelid skin is very thin and heals well, and upper-lid scars hide in the crease when your eyes are open. The goal is not to change the shape of your eyes or your expression, but to make you look rested. That is why it matters not to remove more skin or fat than necessary: overdoing it can leave a hollow look or make it harder to close the eyes.
Who is it for?
Eyelid surgery suits people with heavy or hooded upper lids, under-eye bags that do not improve with rest or creams, or crepey lid skin that makes them look tired. It is most common from the late 30s onward, although some people inherit under-eye bags and consider it earlier. Upper and lower lids can be treated together or separately.
An eye health check is important before surgery. Dry eye, glaucoma and thyroid conditions should be identified and discussed with your surgeon in advance, especially if you are planning to travel to Mexico City for the procedure.

- First few days
Tightness, swelling, bruising and mild discomfort are normal, along with watery eyes, light sensitivity and slightly blurry vision. Cold compresses, rest with your head elevated and no alcohol are recommended.

Most people can read after two or three days and return to work within 5 to 10 days.
- Weeks 2 to 3
Contact lenses can usually be worn again after about two weeks, once your surgeon has checked you. Strenuous activity and alcohol can resume around three weeks.
