What is breast revision surgery?
Any breast surgery — augmentation, lift or reduction — may need adjustments over time or because of a complication. Breast revision surgery aims to fix those issues and restore a more balanced breast contour. Every revision is different, because it starts from a previous operation, tissue that has already healed and implants with their own history.

Common reasons include implant rupture or deflation, wanting a different implant size or type, capsular contracture, a displaced implant (malposition) and the “double bubble” deformity, where the implant and the breast tissue form two separate contours. Several of these problems often show up together.
When an implant is placed, the body forms a layer of scar tissue around it called a capsule; this is a normal part of healing. Sometimes that capsule thickens and tightens, squeezing the implant and distorting the breast — this is capsular contracture. Depending on the case, revision may involve removing or modifying the capsule, exchanging the implant, changing the pocket it sits in, removing it without replacement, or combining the procedure with a breast lift.
How the result turns out depends largely on your skin laxity and on any looseness left by pregnancy or weight loss. Results are generally stable and long-lasting, although gravity and aging eventually change the size and shape of almost every woman’s breasts. Because revision works with tissue that has already been operated on, it can be more demanding than the first surgery and calls for careful planning.
