What is facelift and neck lift?

Over time, skin loses elasticity, the cheeks descend and jowls, deeper folds and loose neck skin appear. A facelift, known medically as a rhytidectomy, addresses these changes in the lower two-thirds of the face, and a neck lift extends the correction below the jawline.

A full facelift is not just a skin pull. It works in layers: the supportive muscle and connective tissue layer (the SMAS) is tightened, excess fat is removed where it accumulates, such as under the chin, and the skin is redraped over the new contour without excess tension. That layered approach is what helps results look natural.

Incisions usually run around the ear and often into the hairline, sometimes with a small incision under the chin to address the neck. A facelift does not change fine skin texture or the fine lines around the lips; those are typically treated with laser, peels or injectables.

A facelift is often combined with other procedures in the same operation, such as eyelid surgery, a brow lift or neck liposuction, to refresh the face as a whole. Results age with you: your face keeps changing over the years, but from a firmer starting point, and in most cases the effect lasts five to ten years.

Who is it for?

It is designed for people with moderate to significant laxity in the cheeks, jawline and neck who feel their face looks older or more tired than they feel. Many patients are in their late 40s or older, but the degree of laxity matters more than age. When laxity is mild, less invasive options may be enough, and your surgeon can help you sort out what a facelift can and cannot do.

Because recovery takes about two weeks before most people feel comfortable in public, patients traveling to Mexico City should plan their stay accordingly and discuss follow-up care with their surgeon before booking.
