What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) uses a silicone gel or saline implant to add volume, projection and balance to the breasts. The implant can sit under the pectoral muscle (submuscular) or above it (subglandular). Which option makes sense depends on your anatomy, how much natural tissue you have and the look you want.

During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will walk you through implant types, shapes, sizes and incision options, and help you choose a volume that fits your frame. There is no single “best” implant — the right plan is the one built around your measurements, lifestyle and goals.
The implant is usually placed through an incision in the crease under the breast (inframammary), along the edge of the areola (periareolar) or in the armpit (transaxillary). Each approach has trade-offs in scar visibility, control over implant position and the type of implant it allows, so your surgeon will recommend the one that best fits your anatomy and the implant you choose.
It is worth knowing up front that breast implants are not lifetime devices. Over the years they may need to be checked, revised or replaced, and your breasts will keep changing with age, pregnancy and weight shifts. Scars typically mature and fade over three months to two years, depending on how your skin heals.
Who is it for?
Women usually consider breast augmentation when they feel their breasts are small for their body, when they have lost volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, or when one breast is noticeably different in size from the other.

- First few days

Many patients return to desk work within a few days, as long as they avoid lifting and straining with their arms.
- Weeks 3–4
Avoid any contact or pressure on the breasts, other than your support bra, for about three to four weeks. The breasts may feel more sensitive to touch during this time.

The implants settle and the shape looks more natural. Scars mature and soften over three months to two years, depending on your own healing.
